What’s all the noise about? In the face of a ceaseless onslaught of conflict, discrimination, abuse and deprivation, the world over, amidst the flashing images of starving children, wounded bodies and ruined homes and nations, there still exists a culture of silence. Making sense of what for most of us is just another news story, or a sponsor a child ad on the tube, is more than we can be bothered with. It’s a shame, but it’s true. The gap between ‘us’ and ‘them’, the ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ world, (aka ‘poor people’ and everyone else), fuels a disconnect that we can’t help but feel. Distance? Ignorance? Delusion? Who knows. It’s probably all of the above and a lot more…It’s time we tried to close that gap. After all, we all live in one world, don’t we?
What’s worse, we often choose not to talk about things that leave us feeling uneasy, that we don’t understand and that might even get us into trouble. The problem is, unless we start talking, we can’t ever hope to overcome or even begin to solve these problems. And that’s what schtoom is about. We know it’s awkward, but it’s time to break the silence and start talking about the things we don’t; to try to understand and educate ourselves and others; then just maybe we can make things a little better. For all of us.

We’re going to start making some noise and we aren’t afraid to do it (LOUDLY).
